Cleveland Clinic describes losses of up to 8% per decade, with the decline accelerating between roughly 65 and 80.
The consequences are not cosmetic. NIH reports that roughly 10% to 20% of older adults have sarcopenia, and that they are hospitalized at nearly twice the rate of those without. Harvard cites a 2.3 times higher risk of low-trauma fracture from a fall. Muscle is what gets you off a low chair, up a curb, and out of a stumble without landing on your hip.
Why older adults need more protein per meal, not less
Older muscle responds less strongly to the same amount of protein than younger muscle does. Researchers call this anabolic resistance: a dose that meaningfully stimulates muscle protein synthesis in a 25-year-old produces a weaker response at 75.
The practical response is to raise the amount per sitting rather than just the daily total. Cleveland Clinic suggests aiming for 20 to 35 grams of protein per meal. Harvard Health suggests older adults doing resistance training take in about 1 to 1.3 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, which works out to roughly 79 to 103 grams for a 175-pound person, spread evenly across meals. The ESPEN expert group recommends at least 1.0 to 1.2 g/kg/day for healthy older adults and 1.2 to 1.5 g/kg/day for those who are malnourished or ill.
Two details matter for choosing a supplement. First, spreading protein across the day beats loading it all at dinner, which is how most older adults actually eat. Second, leucine appears to be a key trigger. Whey is unusually high in leucine, which is why whey-based products come up so often in aging research. Why people stop eating enough protein as they age

Why a cold clear drink is often easier than a shake

- Sets of roughly 12 to 15 repetitions at a moderate effort level
- Gradual progression in sets, then in weight or resistance

Older adults are often managing several conditions at once, so labels matter more than usual. Look at grams of protein per bottle, since 10 grams is not worth the money and the calories.
