    Two things jump out. The first is that the milk-based shakes carry roughly twice the protein of the clear ones.     Casein vs whey: fast protein and slow protein

    Whey digests quickly and produces a sharp, short rise in blood amino acids. Casein forms a soft gel in the stomach, empties more slowly, and produces a lower but longer amino acid release. That is the fast-versus-slow distinction, and it is real.

    So which do you want, and when?

    If you are drinking something within an hour or two of lifting, the fast whey in a clear protein water suits that moment well. If you want a protein feed that keeps working for several hours, through a long gap between meals or overnight, the casein-dominant milk shake is the better fit.     Total protein across the day matters more than the fast-slow split, which is a tiebreaker rather than a strategy.

    Satiety: milk-based wins, and not only because of casein

    This one is not close. A 26 to 42 gram milk shake is far more filling than a 15 gram clear drink, and it stays with you longer. The casein gel is part of that, but so are three plainer things: there is simply more protein, there is fat, and the drink is thick. Thickness alone influences how full a beverage feels.

    That makes milk-based shakes a reasonable stand-in for a light breakfast or a missed lunch. A clear protein water is not a meal replacement and does not pretend to be.     Lactose and digestion

    Clear protein waters are drinkable at room temperature and reasonably pleasant warm. Milk-based shakes are not.     BCAA drinks contain three amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine, usually in a 2:1:1 ratio. The ready-to-drink XTEND bottle registered in the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database lists 3,500 mg leucine, 1,750 mg isoleucine, and 1,750 mg valine, for 7 grams of BCAAs at zero calories, plus 220 mg sodium, 190 mg potassium, and 1 g citrulline malate. There is no fourth amino acid in it.

    EAA drinks contain all nine. NutraBio EAA Pure, for example, lists 3 g leucine, 1.5 g isoleucine, 1.5 g valine, 850 mg lysine, 850 mg threonine, 300 mg phenylalanine, 100 mg histidine, 75 mg tryptophan, and 25 mg methionine per scoop, for roughly 8 grams of essential amino acids at 5 calories. Note the shape of that profile: heavily weighted toward the BCAAs, with only trace methionine and tryptophan.

    Some popular amino drinks hide the split entirely. Optimum Nutrition’s Essential Amino Energy lists a 5 gram amino blend containing all nine essential amino acids plus taurine, glutamine, arginine, beta-alanine, and citrulline, at 10 calories per 9 gram scoop, without disclosing how much of that 5 grams is any individual amino acid. You cannot tell how much leucine you are getting.

    Why nine matters and three does not

    Your body cannot make nine amino acids: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. Building new muscle protein needs all nine present together. Leucine is the trigger, but a trigger with nothing to fire is just a trigger.

    This is the central problem with BCAA drinks. They supply the signal and none of the raw material. The International Society of Sports Nutrition’s position stand on protein and exercise is direct about it, advising athletes to focus on protein sources that contain all of the essential amino acids, because it is the essential amino acids that are required to stimulate muscle protein synthesis.

    The best direct test came from a 2017 study in Frontiers in Physiology. Trained men took 5.6 grams of BCAAs after resistance exercise. Myofibrillar muscle protein synthesis rose 22 percent above placebo, so BCAAs are not inert. But the authors noted that the response was about 50 percent smaller than what had previously been reported for a dose of whey protein containing a similar amount of BCAAs. Same branched-chain amino acids, half the effect, because the other six were missing.

    The leucine threshold, and whether protein water clears it

    Leucine is the amino acid that activates the muscle-building pathway, and there is a rough dose below which the response is weak. The ISSN position stand recommends that protein servings contain 700 to 3,000 mg of leucine. Many researchers use a narrower working figure of roughly 2 to 3 grams per serving for a maximal response in younger adults.

    When BCAAs or EAAs actually make sense

    The case against them is strong but not absolute. There are real situations where an amino acid drink is the better tool:

    • Fasted training, if you care about the fast. Free amino acids still carry calories and still provoke an insulin response, so they are not truly fast-preserving, but a 5 to 25 calorie EAA drink is a smaller interruption than a 70 calorie protein drink.     • Low-protein plant-based diets. Some plant proteins run low in lysine or methionine. An EAA drink can plug that gap, though eating more varied plant protein does the same job for less money.
    • Appetite or tolerance problems. If you genuinely cannot get protein down, free amino acids need no digestion at all.
    • Long endurance sessions. Some athletes prefer amino acids mid-session because there is nothing to digest while running or riding.

    Outside those cases, the honest answer is that if your total daily protein is adequate, adding BCAAs changes essentially nothing, and adding EAAs changes very little. Spending the money on food or a complete protein drink is the better move.

    What about the electrolytes?

    A lot of BCAA drinks are, functionally, flavored electrolyte water with amino acids added. The XTEND bottle above carries 220 mg sodium and 190 mg potassium, which is a real if modest electrolyte dose.     Timing matters less than most marketing suggests. Total daily protein does most of the work, and the window around training is wider than the old advice implied.     Protein water and collagen water do different jobs. Protein water is usually whey isolate: a complete protein with all nine essential amino acids and a lot of leucine, the amino acid that switches on muscle building.     That one fact settles most of the argument.     Collagen water is also thin and clear, but the protein source is hydrolyzed collagen from bovine hide, fish skin, or chicken cartilage. Doses in ready-to-drink bottles usually land between 5 and 15 grams of collagen peptides. Vital Proteins Collagen Water, for example, lists 10 grams of collagen in a 12 ounce bottle. The marketing is aimed at skin, hair, nails, and joints rather than muscle.

    Both are sold in the same coolers, both look like flavored water, and both put a protein number on the front label. The labels are not measuring the same thing.

    Complete vs incomplete protein: the part nobody states plainly

    Your body can make most amino acids on its own. Nine it cannot: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. Those nine are the essential amino acids, and you have to eat them. A protein that supplies all nine in useful amounts is called complete.

    Whey is complete. Collagen is not. Collagen is roughly one third glycine by weight, heavy in proline and hydroxyproline, and it contains zero tryptophan. It is also low in leucine, isoleucine, valine, and methionine. That composition makes sense for what collagen does in the body, which is form structural fiber, not build contractile muscle tissue.

Twenty grams of collagen protein lands around 600 mg, at the very bottom of it, and it still has no tryptophan to work with.

    Protein quality scores, without the jargon

    Nutrition scientists rank protein sources with two scoring systems. PDCAAS is the older one, DIAAS the newer and more precise one. Both work the same basic way: measure how much of each essential amino acid a protein contains, compare that to human requirements, find the amino acid that falls shortest, and score the protein on that weakest link. Then adjust for how much of it you actually digest and absorb.

    Whey scores at the top of the PDCAAS scale, which is capped at 1.0. Collagen and gelatin score at or near zero, and the arithmetic is blunt about why: the limiting amino acid is tryptophan, the amount present is zero, and anything multiplied by zero is zero.

    That is a scoring artifact more than a verdict on collagen’s usefulness. It does not mean collagen is worthless. It does mean collagen should not be counted the way you count whey, chicken, eggs, or soy when you tally your daily protein.

    What collagen peptides actually do have evidence for

    This is where an honest comparison has to slow down. Collagen is a poor muscle-building protein, but that was never really the claim. The claims are about skin and joints, and there is a genuine literature there.

    • Skin hydration and elasticity. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis in Nutrients pooled 26 randomized controlled trials covering 1,721 participants and found statistically significant improvements in skin hydration and elasticity with hydrolyzed collagen. The authors also flagged bias in the included trials and called for larger, better-designed studies.
    • Joint comfort. Cleveland Clinic notes that collagen peptides may help protect ligaments and tendons and could be worth trying for arthritis pain or heavy training loads, while stating plainly that the research is not clear-cut.
    • Hair and nails. Thinner evidence again. Harvard Health points out that the human trial base here is very small, and that no human studies have clearly shown that collagen taken by mouth ends up in your skin, hair, or nails.

    Two caveats worth holding onto. First, many of the trials tested branded products containing vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, biotin, and antioxidants alongside collagen, so it is hard to credit the collagen specifically. Second, a large share of collagen research is funded by collagen manufacturers. Neither point makes the findings wrong. Both mean the honest summary is promising, not proven.

    Typical doses in the research fall in the 2.5 to 15 gram per day range, which Cleveland Clinic describes as generally considered safe. Most collagen waters sit inside that range.

    Can you drink both?

    Yes, and if you care about both goals that is the sensible move. Cover your protein target with complete sources first, then add collagen on top as a separate thing you are doing for a separate reason. What does not work is treating a 10 gram collagen drink as 10 grams of your daily protein.

    Older adults have the most to lose from that swap, because age-related muscle loss responds to complete, leucine-rich protein and not to collagen.     A meta-analysis led by researchers at the University of Waterloo and McMaster University pooled 28 papers published between 1975 and 2016, covering more than 1,300 participants: healthy adults plus people with obesity, type 2 diabetes, or high blood pressure. Published in The Journal of Nutrition, it found no evidence that higher-protein diets harmed kidney function. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) rose modestly on higher protein intakes, which the researchers read as the kidney working harder, not failing.     Sports nutrition guidance sits comfortably above the RDA too. The International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand on protein and exercise recommends 1.4 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day for people training regularly, with roughly 20 to 40 grams per meal, and notes this falls inside the Institute of Medicine’s Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range.

    None of that means protein is unlimited. Mayo Clinic’s consumer guidance puts typical needs at about 0.8 g/kg for sedentary adults, 1.1 to 1.5 g/kg for regular exercisers, and 1.2 to 1.7 g/kg for weight lifters and endurance athletes, and describes intakes above roughly 2 g/kg as more than most people need. Mayo also states plainly that very high intakes can tax the kidneys and pose an added risk to people predisposed to kidney disease.     Why your creatinine can go up without anything being wrong

    Creatinine is a waste product of creatine turnover in muscle. Your blood level reflects two things: how well your kidneys clear it and how much of it you produce. Eating more protein, carrying more muscle, and taking creatine all push production up. eGFR is not measured directly at all.     Population data show the ambiguity clearly. In the CHRIS study, published in the Journal of Nephrology, adults in the highest quartile of protein intake had an eGFR roughly 1.6 mL/min/1.73 m2 lower than those in the lowest quartile. The authors were careful about what that meant.     Look at the third row. For someone on a low-protein renal diet, one bottle can eat half the day’s allowance and deliver nothing else of nutritional value. That is where protein water is genuinely inappropriate.

    Now the bottom row. Dialysis strips amino acids out of the blood, so protein needs go up, not down, and renal dietitians do sometimes use protein supplements deliberately.     Where the “protein dehydrates you” idea comes from

    The mechanism is real and it goes like this. Protein you do not use for building tissue is broken down, and the nitrogen has to leave the body. The liver converts it to urea. The kidney excretes urea in urine, and excreting a solute requires water to carry it. More protein means more urea, which means more obligatory urine water loss.

    The 2005 review Dietary protein intake and renal function in Nutrition and Metabolism, by Martin, Armstrong and Rodriguez, puts a figure on it: excreting one gram of urea nitrogen requires roughly 40 to 60 millilitres of additional water. That sounds alarming until you notice the two qualifiers the authors attach to it.

    First, that estimate comes from survival contexts where water and energy are both restricted, and the authors state it is not necessarily applicable to individuals whose calorie and water intakes are adequate. Second, and more directly: they conclude that they know of no studies in healthy people with normal kidney function showing a clear relationship between higher protein intake and dehydration.

    So the concern is about total protein intake across a whole diet over time, and mostly about people eating a great deal of protein while drinking very little. It is not about a single 15 gram bottle that arrives with 500 millilitres of water attached. The water in the bottle far exceeds the water needed to clear the nitrogen in it.     What a beverage hydration index actually measures

    In 2016, a group led by Ronald Maughan published a randomised trial in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that created a scale for it: the beverage hydration index, or BHI.

    Participants drank one litre of a test beverage over 30 minutes, then urine output was measured for the next four hours. Still water was set at 1.0, and every other drink was scored against it. Higher score means more of the fluid was still in the body.

    Thirteen beverages were tested, including sparkling water, cola, diet cola, a sports drink, an oral rehydration solution, orange juice, lager, coffee, tea, and both full-fat and skimmed milk. The results were narrower than most people expect:

    • Better than water: oral rehydration solution and both milks retained significantly more fluid at four hours. Orange juice scored well at two hours but the advantage faded.
    • No different from water: the sports drink, cola, diet cola, sparkling water, tea, coffee and lager. All statistically indistinguishable from plain water.
    • The two levers: sodium, which holds water in the extracellular space, and energy density, which slows gastric emptying so the fluid arrives more gradually and triggers less of a diuretic response.

    Note the dose. One litre in 30 minutes is a stress test. Drink 300 millilitres over an hour and the differences between most beverages shrink toward nothing, because your kidneys are not being asked to dump a sudden fluid load.

    Where protein water lands on that scale

    No published BHI value exists for protein water specifically, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. What we can say from the mechanism is that protein water has a little energy and a little protein, which slightly slows gastric emptying, but usually very little sodium. That puts it near plain water, plausibly a fraction above it, and clearly below milk and oral rehydration solution.

    It is not an electrolyte replacement drink

    Protein water is built around protein, not minerals. Most products carry little or no added sodium, and sodium is the electrolyte that actually governs fluid retention after heavy sweating.

    Sweat sodium losses vary enormously between people and conditions, but a hard, hot session can cost well over a gram of sodium across a couple of litres of sweat. A protein water with 50 milligrams of sodium does not replace that in any meaningful sense. Drinking a large volume of very low-sodium fluid after heavy sweat losses is the exact situation where you want salt in the drink, not protein.

    Why sugar alcohols are the usual answer

    Sugar alcohols are only partly absorbed in the small intestine. What is left travels to the large intestine, where gut bacteria ferment it and produce gas. The FDA states plainly that sugar alcohols can produce abdominal gas, bloating and diarrhea in some individuals, and sorbitol and mannitol carry a laxative-effect warning at higher intakes.

    Change one variable at a time. Testing two things at once tells you nothing.

    1. Days 1 and 2 – establish a baseline. Drink your usual product at your usual pace. Write down the time you drank it, the time symptoms started, and what the symptoms actually were (gas, fullness, belching, cramping, stool changes). Timing is the most useful data you will collect.

    Clear whey is sold in tubs, usually 14 to 20 servings. It behaves like any other protein water ingredient list once mixed: water, hydrolyzed whey isolate, acidulants, sweeteners, flavoring.

    What protein water actually is

    Protein water is a ready-to-drink bottled beverage. Someone else did the mixing, the pasteurizing, and the bottling. You take it off a shelf and drink it.

    Typical numbers per bottle: 15 to 20 grams of protein in 16.9 to 20 fluid ounces, 70 to 90 calories, zero to 1 gram of sugar. Many bottled versions add electrolytes and B vitamins. The protein source is, again, whey protein isolate, sometimes labeled as clear whey on the front of the bottle. That overlapping label is where most of the confusion comes from.

    So the honest framing is this: protein water is a category of finished drink. Clear whey is a protein ingredient, and also the name of the powder you use to make that drink at home.     Why clear whey is clear, and why it has to be sour

    Regular whey looks milky for two reasons. It still contains residual fat and lactose that scatter light, and the protein itself is not fully soluble at the pH of plain water.

    Making it clear takes three steps.

    1. Strip the non-protein material. Cross-flow microfiltration or ion exchange removes most of the fat and lactose, taking whey from around 80 percent protein (concentrate) to around 90 percent (isolate).
    2. Break the protein into smaller pieces. Hydrolysis, using enzymes or heat, cuts the intact proteins into shorter peptides. Smaller peptides scatter less light and stay dissolved more readily.
    3. Drop the pH. This is the step most people miss. Whey proteins only stay clear and heat-stable in a narrow acidic window. A 2022 invited review in the Journal of Dairy Science on shelf-stable dairy protein beverages notes that turbidity starts climbing once the pH of heating rises past about 3.9, and that clear acidic beverages are formulated around pH 3.5 to 3.7.

    That pH requirement is why clear whey and protein water taste the way they taste. A drink at pH 3.5 is roughly as acidic as orange juice. Sour, citrus-adjacent flavors work with that. Vanilla and chocolate do not. The fruit flavor lineup is a consequence of the chemistry, not a marketing preference.

    It also explains the aftertaste some people notice. Whey proteins are measurably more astringent at low pH, and without milk fat or lactose there is nothing to round the edges off. Reporting on clear protein has quoted dietitians describing a bitter or astringent finish in some products, masked with sweeteners.

    Taste and texture: juice-like versus milky

    Clear whey and protein water drink like a thin, slightly tart sports drink. No body, no coating on the tongue, no foam once the bubbles settle. They are easy to drink cold, easy to drink fast, and easy to drink when you do not feel like eating.

    Milky whey drinks have body. They feel like food. That is an advantage if you want the drink to blunt your appetite and a disadvantage if you want something you can finish during a set.     One practical note in favor of clear formats: no clumping. Clear whey dissolves in plain cold water with a few shakes. No blender, no lumps at the bottom of the bottle.

    Cost per gram of protein

    This is where the two formats separate. Prices below were checked in August 2026 at US retailers and will drift, but the ratio between formats is stable.

    Read the last column, not the price column. At normal promotional pricing, clear whey powder runs about $1.30 to $1.50 per 20 grams of protein, against $2.33 to $2.69 for bottled protein water. That is a 35 to 45 percent saving, or roughly $1 a serving. Drink one a day and the powder saves you something like $300 a year.

    Two honest caveats. First, at full sticker price in a specialty retailer, clear whey powder lands around $2.00 per 20 grams and the gap mostly closes. Powder wins because powder is almost always discounted, not because powder is inherently a bargain. Second, both clear formats are expensive relative to ordinary whey. Standard milky whey concentrate is typically the cheapest protein per gram of any of these options, because it skips the extra filtration and hydrolysis. Paying a premium for clarity is a preference, not an upgrade in protein quality.

    Portability and the rest of the trade-offs

    Cost is not the only axis. A few things the price table does not capture:

    • Grab-and-go. A bottle needs nothing. A powder needs a shaker, a scoop, and access to cold water. On a commute, at an airport, or in a car, the bottle wins outright.
    • Dose control. With powder you can run a half scoop for 10 grams or a scoop and a half for 30. A bottle is whatever the bottle is.

    • Extras. Bottled protein waters often include electrolytes, B vitamins, or caffeine. Most powders are protein and flavor only.
    • Waste. One tub replaces 14 to 20 plastic bottles.

    Which one should you pick?

    Pick clear whey powder if you drink protein water most days, you mostly drink it at home or at a gym with a water fountain, you want to control the dose, and you would rather not pay a dollar a serving for someone else to add the water.     Pick bottled protein water if you drink it occasionally, you need it to survive in a bag or a desk drawer, you travel with it, or you simply will not do the shaker-cleaning step often enough to make a tub worth it. A tub you do not use is more expensive than a bottle you do.

    Plenty of people run both: a tub at home, a few bottles in the car. That is a reasonable answer, not a cop-out.

    Bottom line

    Clear whey is the powder; protein water is usually the bottle. Nutritionally they are close to identical, because they are built from the same whey isolate and formulated to the same acidic pH range. The powder costs roughly $1.30 to $1.50 per 20 grams of protein, the bottle roughly $2.30 to $2.70, so heavy users save real money by mixing their own. Neither is a better source of protein than ordinary milky whey, and both are more expensive than it. Choose on format and price, not on the promise that clear protein does something different in your body.

    Close, but not identical. Clear whey starts as whey protein isolate or hydrolysate, then gets processed further and formulated at a low pH so it stays transparent in water.     Does clear whey have less protein than regular whey powder?
